Join award-winning author Niki Jabbour as she shares her techniques for growing more food, reducing pest problems, and dealing with unpredictable weather in her Nova Scotia vegetable garden. With the special challenges of Manitoba’s climate in mind, she’ll spotlight a wide variety of season extenders like shade cloth, row cover, cold frames, and polytunnels, as well as show you how to use garden covers to prevent damage from deer, flea beetles, and cabbage worms. She’ll also share some of her stand-out crops and varieties for fall and even winter harvesting.

A whiff of warm air woke up dormant bulbs in the pot. ”It’s spring! It’s spring!” they started to shout, preparing their shoots to grow up into the light! It was in the midst of winter not in the spring. A crafty gardener can trigger them to sprout and bloom.
Horticulturists call this technique “Forcing”. At Easter thousands of forced lilies are sold on the market.
Forcing bulbs is fun. Blooming plants will give a special “feels like spring” touch to your place.
Plant material will be provided.  All are Welcome!

John P. Morgan – President, Prairie Habitats Inc., will present about why we should consider using native Manitoba plants in our familiar, but often fairly sterile, urban and rural landscapes. Some of the plant’s unique history, importance, folklore, benefits and aesthetics will be examined. Patterning our approach to land use after the ecology of the natural systems that evolved over millennia has economic, social and environmental effects. Integrating native wildflowers, grasses and shrubs successfully into modern landscapes takes knowledge, passion and time. The results, however, can lead us to a better appreciation and stewardship of those same natural processes that sustain our species.

Five Seasons-the Gardens of Piet Oudolf

This film about the world’s most celebrated garden designer immerses viewers in Oudolf’s work and takes them inside his creative process, from his beautifully abstract sketches, to his theories on beauty, to the ecological implications of his ideas.
Discussions take place through all four seasons in Piet’s own gardens at Hummelo and on visits to his signature public works in New York, Chicago and the Netherlands.
The film also follows Oudolf as he designs and installs a major new garden at Hauser and Wirth Somerset.

Trees are essential — Learn the basics of tree care in this visual presentation by the Manitoba Master Gardener Association “Branching Out” study group with special guest Michael Allen, Viburnum Tree Care and certified ISA arborist. Educational handouts will be included.

There will be an abundance of educational handouts for registrants as well as two donated books on trees, copies of “Field Guide to the Native Trees of Manitoba” from the Canadian Forestry Service/Manitoba Natural Resources Forestry for registrants, as well as 60 copies of the Manitoba Hydro Forest Enhancement Tree Care Guide.

Maximum seating capacity is approximately 30 registrants per class for a potential audience of 60. The presentations are being promoted by Winnipeg Public Library. Each evening presentation is identical.
